Thomas Eakins was born in 1844 in Philadelphia. From an early age, he showed a keen interest in the human form and scientific precision. This fascination would shape his entire artistic career and lead to both his greatest triumphs and most significant controversies. Eakins' approach to art was revolutionary for his time. Unlike many of his contemporaries who idealized their subjects, Eakins insisted on unflinching realism.
